Title: A Stable Isotopic Approach to Estimate the Contribution of Evapotranspiration to the Precipitation Over Coastal Region of Eastern IndiaGuide: Dr. Prasanta Sanyal, IISER Kolkata
Hydrological cycle over continents has input from precipitation and losses to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration. With the increase in anthropogenic activities and associated deforestation, it is necessary to quantify the contribution of terrestrial evapo-transpiration on a regional scale. In my MS project, I am involved in estimating evapo-transpiration using stable isotopic signatures of atmospheric moisture and precipitation. Moisture and precipitation samples were simultaneously collected over a period of 10 months in this context. Oxygen isotope analysis has been performed and the difference between the δ(18)O values of the moisture and precipitation is found to be 9.4 %, which is close to the equilibrium fractionation between vapor and liquid (10.2 %) calculated for a condensation temperature of 10 degree C. Further modelling and calculations show that the ratio of evaporation and prepitition is 0.63. Hydrogen isotope analysis is yet to be performed. Find brief report of MS work performed till now below.

Title: A Study on the Seasonal Variations in Atmospheric Moisture Using Stable Isotopes of OxygenGuide: Dr. Prasanta Sanyal, IISER Kolkata
The stable isotope analysis of air moisture can greatly support in tracking the hydrologic cycle through fingerprinting the source of water vapor, its transport and its condensation through direct analysis. Daily atmospheric moisture samples were collected using cryogenic trap method and the seasonal variations were studied using stable oxygen isotopes.
